One of the more popular theories about human development is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, a representation of basic needs that people will need to meet before they can attain the next level. Since the publication of Maslow’s book, “Motivation and Personality” in 1954, it has become the basis for much sociological research, instruction in secondary and higher levels of psychology, and management training.

From bottom to top, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is represented by the following;

  • Physiological: The basics of survival which include food, water, shelter, and clothing
  • Safety: Protection from outside threats ranging from personal to global in scale
  • Social: Acceptance from others in terms of friendships and family
  • Esteem: Respect from others, to be valued, and recognized
  • Self-Actualization: Reaching personal goals, achieving fame and recognition from outsiders
  • Self-Transcendence: Spiritual or altruism goals, those rising to the top of human consciousness

The hierarchy can be applied to managerial training programs in many different professions. It is used to better understand how those in charge can better assess, plan, implement, and evaluate actions taken to improve the standing of their business or organization. For example, in nursing the hierarchy of needs is used for patient care so that the proper actions are taken to provide the recipient with the best chance of recovery.
