How Earthquakes Happen

The tectonic movement of large plates on the Earth’s crust is what causes earthquakes to occur. The most common type of earthquake is caused when two different tectonic plates collide with one rolling over the other, driving it down into the mantle. This type of movement causes the formation of mountain ranges, volcanos, and earthquakes.

The earthquake happens when the two plates stick, building up the energy until there is a slip or brake which results in an earthquake. Depending on the amount of stress, the earthquake may become quite massive or barely be noticeable. When the break occurs, the stored energy creates a shock wave which is the earthquake in action.

It should be noted that tectonic plates are in constant motion. In places where there is no interruption of the movement, earthquakes do not occur. This is because the movement itself is smooth and consistent. It is when the movement is interrupted, and the energy builds up that its release causes an earthquake to happen.

There are other types of earthquakes as well, with the second most common being those that occur inside a single tectonic plate. These types of earthquakes are less predictable in terms of their location, which means that it is possible they could strike at any time.

Earthquakes can cause considerable damage and lead to other types of destruction as well. In the US, the most famous of all earthquakes was arguably the San Francisco quake of 1906. However, most of the death and destruction occurred after the earthquake struck when fires broke out across the city. It is often not the quake itself, but the aftermath that causes much of the damage and destruction in many of the larger earthquakes.

The New Madrid earthquakes of 1812, located in the bootheel of Missouri, not only destroyed the town, but also caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards for a short time. This intraplate earthquake was arguably the worst, although the death toll was not as great because it was a sparsely populated area as compared to San Francisco.

Understanding the power that earthquakes deliver means locating and identifying the formations that lead to earthquakes happening. The more information about how earthquakes are created, the more the areas can be located so the public will understand what to do when it strikes.

By locating earthquake formations, it becomes easier to warn the public about the potential dangers that it has in their location. With the earthquake causes being known, it is hoped that one day they become more predictable so that warnings may save more lives.
